Basketball Basics: The Different Types of Dribbling

The Different Types of Dribbling

In basketball, players have only two options to move the ball from one teammate to another: passing or dribbling. Here, we will focus on the various types of dribbling commonly used on the court.

The Different Types of Dribbling

1. Low Dribble

As the name suggests, low dribble means keeping the ball close to the floor while bouncing. This technique effectively protects the ball from defenders by extending the player's arm to minimize the space the opponent can penetrate.

2. Speed Dribble

Speed dribble is typically used when a player is in an open court and needs to maximize time while maintaining control of the ball and their body. Since the player isn't heavily guarded, excessive ball protection is unnecessary, allowing for faster dribbling to cover more distance.

3. Change-of-Pace Dribble

This type of dribble involves slowing down in a way that makes the opponent think the player is stopping to pass. Once the defender reacts, the player accelerates quickly to drive past them.

4. Crossover Dribble

The crossover dribble helps a player evade defenders by dribbling with one hand and pushing the ball in front before switching hands. While effective for changing direction, it leaves the ball vulnerable to steals, so keeping the dribble low is crucial.

5. Reverse Dribble

When closely guarded, players can use the reverse dribble by turning their body to shield the ball. However, this technique involves losing sight of the ball temporarily, increasing the risk of a backcourt steal.

6. Half-Reverse Dribble

Similar to the reverse dribble, the half-reverse dribble requires a 90-degree turn followed by a quick return to the original position. Speed is essential to ensure the ball is successfully transferred between hands.

7. Hockey Dribble

The hockey dribble uses a combination of head and shoulder fakes with an abrupt change of speed to distract the defender and break free from close guarding.

Conclusion

These are some fundamental dribbling techniques players can use to outmaneuver tough defensive plays during basketball games.
